Boys of Summer

Boogie Boarding
The men in my life rarely sit and relax on the sand.  Which is fine by me because they’re fun to watch and easy on the eyes. 😉  Plus, we all know this little sponger is gonna want to ride his boogie board into the sand a thousand times and someone has to take him.  {Not it.}

As most boys of summer H’s age, he doesn’t require much to entertain him.  He’s fine just running, wide open.  Or when discovering the biggest hermit crab on the planet.

Boys of Summer
It seems however, that the older a boy of summer gets, there must be some kind of game or competition.  I’ll take the high road here and avoid the obvious ball reference.  Oh….woops.  What….it was low hanging fruit.  Bahaaaa.  Oh I just can’t help myself.

Boche Ball
I can’t leave my sweet girl out, this is what happens when there’s too much boy time.

Too Much Boy Time
She and I are looking forward to a relaxing holiday weekend with our boys.  She’s been getting used to her long days, and we are excited to have some extra time to spend together with school out on Monday.  Wishing everyone a fantastic Labor Day!  Cheers!

My Life In The Car Line

Car Line 1
Call me crazy, but I really don’t hate the car line. Maybe it’s because I’m new to this, and everything about our first child starting Kindergarten seems exciting.  But I don’t remember drop off or pick up being anything like this thirty years ago.  It’s like a well oiled machine of safety and efficiency this car line stuff.  For those unfamiliar (which was me until a week and a half ago), the car line refers to the lane and procedure in which children are dropped off and picked up from school. It’s like a giant shoot, like skee balls in the rack, or bowling balls in the bowling ball return. For pick up, we park and wait in a line for school to end.

Once the first group of cars are loaded with kids, the staff pull the cones which block the cars from moving and those cars file out.  As those cars pull away, the next twenty cars pull up and park behind the cones and the process begins again.  Now, the key is to get there early.  Otherwise the car line for the elementary school gets so long that you’re going to get caught in the middle school buses and car line.  Then your whole afternoon is shot.

Car Line 5
Dare I say I actually LIKE the car line.  First of all, let’s talk about the thirty to forty minutes of solid STILL TIME in the pick up line.  This may be where some folks go nuts…just sitting still…in a parked car.  But man, am I getting $#^% done!  No, it isn’t going through the gazillion photos taken over the summer.  No, I can’t work out the inspiration boards I promised for my friend Katie and her kids.  It obviously isn’t cleaning the house, or any project that requires my being anywhere but the car, but it’s the little stuff that gets checked off my to-do list.  I’ve coordinated home repairs, responded to emails, made doctors appointments, signed up for a month’s worth of after school activities, made meal plans for the week (and grocery lists), and never underestimate the pure joy of some good old fashioned social media stalking catch up.  I’ve pinned and amazon primed and actually READ blogs more than I have been able to all summer.  All while H blissfully zones out to Scooby Doo.  No judgies.

Most importantly though, R is gone for seven hours a day. SEVEN! The time spent in this ritual of the car line feels like I’m somehow putting some of my time back in, paying homage to the parenting time I now don’t get with her. Since I no longer get to walk her into class, or walk to her door to scoop her from school, I like her knowing that I am still right there to start her school day and right there to end it.

Car Line 3
I hope everyone had a wonderful start to another school year. We have loved each day, and are settling into the new schedule.  More on the first days soon.  In the meantime, am I the only one who likes the car line?  I can’t be….tell me how you spend your car line time! I’d love to hear from you. Until then, cheers!

Collecting Dust

Once again The Moments has been collecting a bit of dust while we are out collecting moments. In my defense, they are some pretty awesome moments we’re tucking away! But still, I applaud those successful bloggers who make time to write every day, to have a publishing schedule, to pump out fresh content.  I haven’t pushed myself to stay up later, or to get up earlier.  I haven’t scheduled time every day for working on posts while the kids do something on their own.  We’ve been out and about and living and soaking up the moments of summer.  Each night I lay my head down and lament over having another day pass without tending to this space. The Moments is absolutely a priority for me, it’s become a way to document and chronicle these times for my family. And it’s mine. So I’ll let myself off the hook for a second longer. And I will keep on keeping on….seeking, creating, living, and collecting moments. They’ll all make it here eventually, but most likely NOT in chronological order….

Thank you for checking in! Stay tuned.
